How to join multiplayer minecraft on lan?

Me and my friend are on the same Wi-Fi and we're trying to play multiplayer minecraft through lan. So one of us will open a world to lan which should bring it up automatically for the other person on multiplayer (i thought) but it doesn't. So then the person with the open lan can open up another minecraft and find it under multiplayer to give the other person the IP address but it never connects. Anyone help? A while ago we tried connecting through a server but this failed so we tried this.

Short abbreviation of Give a man a fish you?

So recently I have been asked to do something for a minecraft server of which asks me to put up a sign of "Give a man a fish you feed him for a day, however teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime" but it won't fit, I really need a short abbreviation of this so that I can fit it on, this is what you can't change
"Give a man a fish you feed him…" That is the start but I need a short version of the rest after that.

Don't know anything about laptops and there apu's for gaming for under $500?

Thinking about buying another computer to add to the lan so we can have 4 players in minecraft
thing is

#1 i'm on a budget $500 (and i know i can get a desktop that will work fine for this)

#2 there are three pc's here and i don't know if i have the room for another desktop

so i'm looking at laptops

So my question is,
---what will play minecraft on my LAN server for under $500 in canada with decent fps?

Minecraft server not working? - 1

My logmein hamachi is working fine but when i first run the server software from the minecraft website, the stuff isn't loading properly {as seen in the below screen shot}. I followed all the directions on this site: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Minecraft-Server-With-Hamachi

I have a private WoW server and minecraft server that my friends can play on, but we're looking for different games to play. I don't want other 3rd party servers, I want to be able to customize and port my own server, running from my client.
