How to add a mod to minecraft?

I use Minecraft with allot of mods and from time to time a certain action in the game corrupts the whole save and i need to start all over again, this is really annoying. So i need a way to automatically make a copy of the folder every 10 minutes or something like that.

Why don't I have a mods file in my minecraft file?

Ok, so i was trying to install the mod mo creatures on my windows, I downgraded the game to 1.7.2 by going to the 'edit profile' option in the launcher and selecting it. And I downloaded all the files i needed to in order to install mo creatures. But when I went to my.minecraft files to put the custom mob spawner and Dr.Zharks mo creature files into the mods files, well I don't have one. I don't know why but I just don't have the file that's titled 'mods'. I downloaded forge before hand but I don't know if that really has anything to do with it. And it is my first time installing mods. So can someone tell me why I don't have a mods file and how i can get it or find it.

How to get my Minecraft up and running again after installing Flan's Mod?

I have just installed Flan's Mod (on Minecraft), but as soon as it finished and I went on Minecraft, it froze, the Minecraft screen stayed blank black, and it taken me to a crash report. Why is this happening? How can I stop this?
