I played back in the early days of Alpha and Beta, before multiplayer ever existed. I haven't checked on the updates since then. How is it now; can you list any new features that Notch has created?

Basically what happened was, I was playing minecraft with a friend and left to go get food. When I came back, my cat had crawled on the keyboard and the screen is all stretched. I restarted the computer and it did nothing. How do i fix this? Thank you.
Added (1). This is also a toshiba laptop. It's fairly new, bought it 2015, but has been having some problems.
I'm thinking about buying it. Is it about survival and finding resources to build whatever? Or much more?

I have been researching for about a month. I feel this is perfect for me. I opted out of SSD for now because of budget but I will get one in future. And I don't need an optical drive.
I just need sugestions if I should change anything or mainly if i'm overkilling on parts and if I could get cheaper alternatives.
