Updating Windows to 8 or 8.1?

I have a Dell Inspiron N5010 and I need to know a few things about updating windows.
1: Do you have to pay to update to windows 8 or 8.1
2: Do you know how much it will cost?
3: If I update to windows 8 or 8.1 will everything still be on it? (I do a lot of writing on open office will that still be there along with all of my things I saved. What about pictures and the sticky notes tab that windows 7 had? Also downloaded games and such, like, IMVU, Spotify, Minecraft, itunes. Will those still be there?)
4: Can my computer even run the new versions of windows? Or is it to old or something?

I really need to know this stuff! Sorry I ask a lot of questions!
If you answer the question tell me if you like windows 8 or 8.1!
Really APPRECIATE IT!

What can be copyrighted in an app?

I'm asking this question because I would like to know a few things about copyrights concerning apps. Now, I know that music, artwork and names can be copyrighted but about the actual gameplay? I was planning on making a game similar to quell by FallenTreeGames which can be found here:

https://play.google.com/...free&hl=en

Am I infringing any copyright If I make a similar gameplay, using some of the game mechanics and adding my own ones, but with different graphics and music? I tried to check if Quell's creator had any patent but I couldn't find any. Finally, I have read this:

"According to USPTO, the rules of a game can't be copyrighted. The characters/artwork printed material (for example a printed list of rules) in a game are subject to copyright.
It's legal to make an identical game with identical rules as long as you don't copy any part of the design and creative components. This is how "Words with Friends" became so popular by copying the game rules of Scrabble, and Hasbro (who owns Scrabble) was not able to take legal action."
http://stackoverflow.com/...ht-of-apps

In short, what I would like to know is can I get sued for using similar game mechanics as another app? I know there are a few clones of Minecraft and Temple run or Angry birds which are probably fine but I just want to make sure that I won't get in any trouble.

How to get grass to grow in a desert biome in Minecraft?

I placed dirt blocks. I even cut tall grass and planted it in the hope that regular grass would grow from it, but it did not work. I don't know how to collect a grass block except on cheat mode. Is there a way to get a grass block?

Added (1). I have never heard of a silk touch shovel. How do you get it?

Virtual worlds for tween girls?

I'm not a big fan of just plain dress up, but i hate when you can't customize your avatar. I want free games that are online, not one of those ones you download like wizard 101 or something. I hate when games make you pay money to access most features. I currently play minecraft, clubpenguin, roblox, secret builders, and gaia. It's getting pretty boring. I like action and adventure, like rpgs, but i don't like when there are multiple quests. I would prefer a game without major filtering (like build-a-bearville). Does anyone know a good game for me? Please describe the game if you can. (I would like pixie hollow if it wasn't shut down, and possibly toontown)

How to install minecraft texture packs?

Okay so I tried installing some for my sister yesterday and it was so stubborn and could not do it. What ways can I install it? I have windows 8.1 and I wanted the texture packs from Planet Minecraft. Hope you can help, thanks!

Added (1). Okay, thanks! Yesterday I spent probably 2-3 hours and I had it in the minecraft folder but it would not open up. It said it was "zipped". My dad is a computer geek, and he couldn't even find it out! It was so frustrating but I'll definitely try again after my schoolwork. Thanks!

Added (2). @ Sean, that's literally what I did yesterday about a 1,000 times but it would not open the file and it wouldn't appear next to the default like it should.
