Updating Windows to 8 or 8.1?

I have a Dell Inspiron N5010 and I need to know a few things about updating windows.
1: Do you have to pay to update to windows 8 or 8.1
2: Do you know how much it will cost?
3: If I update to windows 8 or 8.1 will everything still be on it? (I do a lot of writing on open office will that still be there along with all of my things I saved. What about pictures and the sticky notes tab that windows 7 had? Also downloaded games and such, like, IMVU, Spotify, Minecraft, itunes. Will those still be there?)
4: Can my computer even run the new versions of windows? Or is it to old or something?

I really need to know this stuff! Sorry I ask a lot of questions!
If you answer the question tell me if you like windows 8 or 8.1!
Really APPRECIATE IT!

No pay and most of the downloads will be deleted but cool new features will be added try searching a how to on youtube btw It takes a while to update

To go from Win 7 to Win 8.1 it costs. How much? It depends on where you buy it, of course. Microsoft is currently selling it for $119.99. Here is the link

Amazon.com has it for a little cheaper

NOW:
Can your PC run it? It should be able to if you have Win 7 on it. But the best way to make sure is to run the upgrade assistant

BEFORE you actually take the leap and install win 8: you need to make sure that all of your software and hardware will run with Win 8. Only YOU can do this, we can't, as we don't know anything about your computer. Games, software programs you've installed over the years you've had your Win 7 PC, your hardware devices you've installed, all of these things you need to make sure are compatible with Win 8. Why? Because not 100% of the programs out there are.

My advice: Stick with Win 7.
