How to you make a dropper in minecraft?

Dig a hole about 10 blocks deep. At 8 blocks down, place a block down. From there stack 12 blocks of sand or gravel in the hole. Dig a secondary hole to allow yourself back in the first hole you dug, blocking behind as you go. After you've made it back to the first hole, destroy the block above you. You will have created a dropper.
