What is the best way into getting into the programming industry?

Hi! For a couple of years now I've been wanting become a programmer when I've finished my education (A-levels and university), and a big problem for me is that after I finish Uni I have no idea what to do next.

Recently I've started working on some projects for a friend of a friend making some plugins for his minecraft server (I'm actually getting paid for this - quite pleased about that). But I'd rather stay away from freelance as it just doesn't suite me.

The bottom line is this, I've got my education sorted (A's and A*'s) and I'm definitely going to university but I would like some tips on what else I should do.

Replies would be great!

Learn languages that are in demand. That is C++, C#, Java (although not so much lately)
Get work experience and work your way… It takes years.

Build up a portfolio of work you complete. The more impressive the work, the more likely it will get you noticed. The field is saturated with novice programmers, so proving to a prospective employer that you can produce clean, working code is worth its weight in gold.

as with anything, the key is practice practice parctice. Great programmers are not just talented, they are constantly learning and improving. Keep on top of new practices and watch for new trends.
