Why can't I make myself OP in my Minecraft server?

I have a Mac and I recently made a Minecraft server. I put my name in ops.json but I'm not OP. I also typed in 'op (my username)' in Terminal but it still doesn't work.

Minecraft Forge 1.6.2 server won't let more than one player join?

Alright, so, I made a forge server for minecraft 1.6.2 and installed a few mods. I told my friend to install the same mods and he has, (he also has forge installed as well, the client version). I have both the client and server versions downloaded, and everytime i run the server and join it, it works fine. Everything is cool until he tries to join. As soon as he joins, I'm kicked off and the game crashes. If i close Minecraft and open it again to join, his game crashes and mine works fine.

What is the best way to start/run your own Minecraft server?

I don't know if I should run it off of my own computer, or have someone else host it.

Minecraft server- Failed to bind to port?

I have a server from gratisserver.nu, so I can't use mcedit. Is there a command I can use so that all the players will spawn in the spawnpoint I have built?
