Problems with NVIDIA and display?

I discovered that the reason why Minecraft always runs so poorly is because Java by default uses your integrated graphics because java is usually easy to run.
So i decided to open up my Nvidia COntrol Panel, just to find a message saying "You are currently not using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU"
I went into my regular control panel and discovered that i don't have the option of adjusting my resolution (it's shaded out).
I've been using a monitor a friend gave me for a few months because he was moving and asked if I could keep it… Maybe that has something to do?
If any more information is needed I will provide it.

That laptop has both an hdmi and vga out. Sometimes, as is the case with mine, the hdmi out is driven by discrete graphics, whereas the vga is driven by intel graphics, and it's simply a case of which you plug into. Run minecraft on an hdmi monitor, or the screen it came with. You can also go into your nvidia control panel by right clicking your desktop, and going to manage 3d settings, program settings tab, select a program to customize (minecraft.exe obviously, wherever it is on your computer) and below that, select high performance nvidia processor as preferred graphics. Then apply.
