How to make a Nether portal on Minecraft?

I'm been trying to make one for the past 20 minutes. I know I have to make a 5 by 4 block thing with obsidian and then touch the inside with the flint and stone, but it doesn't work.

I keep trying to download minecraft but each time i load it it crashes with this text

Why does minecraft 1.9 lag so bad for me?

A have a halfway decent computer but a lag bad in Minecraft 1.9. And by bad I mean BAD. Its not just in game though. Its even in the menu. What am i doing wrong? I'm playing with Optifine too!

any suggestions on what i should do?
