I just downloaded minecraft but it won't let me build. I select a certain block but it doesn't use it to build, just tear stuff down. Also I'm not 100% sure if this makes any difference but I'm in creative mode.
How to build in minecraft?

Do you mean place blocks down? In that case, click the right mouse key.

When your in game, click ESC, then Options… And then Controls…
You will see all the controls.
Right Mouse Button: Place Block
Left Mouse Button: Break Block
