How many blocks down must you dig in Minecraft to find Diamonds?

Diamond ore only appears below Y-Level 16. If you take highest sea level as Level 62, you have to go down at least 46 blocks.

Be aware that this is only for mining. Diamonds can be found through natural generation in chests.
