Can you see if you can get a furnace to cook with no fuel on minecraft?

It is impossible to cook in a furnace without any fuel. If you but 1 piece of any kind of fuel it will disappear and fill the fire symbol underneath the thing you are cooking. You screen may have also glitched (It happens a lot in Minecraft).
