Alienware 17

Macbook pro 15

Good question.

Can the MacBook Air not do what you want to do, besides the games?

They are very different computers. The Alienware is a tank with virtually no battery life. The Macbook Pro is a very thin and light weight computer with superb battery life. You already have a powerful desktop for gaming. So the only reason I can see for a laptop is portability. Which the Alienware does not meet that criteria. It is too large. The Alienware is just meant to be occasionally moved around not lugged about everywhere.

It would be more apt to compare a Macbook Pro Retina 15 to a Dell XPS 15. They are direct competitors. They are both thin and light. They are energy efficient with high resolution screens. They also use high performance SSD not a hard drive or standard SSD but very high performance models. The Apple uses a high performance SM951 SSD the Dell uses a more standard PM951.

Given that from a pure hardware value. The Dell XPS 15 is a better deal. For comparison I'm comparing a decked out XPS 15 and Macbook Pro.
For $2300 the Dell XPS 15 has
- 6th Generation Core i7 6700HQ
- Better battery life with a 6 Cell 84 Watt battery
- 16GB RAM (upgradeable to 32GB)
- 1TB SSD (PM
- 4K IPS touch screen (3840x2160)
- GTX 960M 2GB graphics (Faster)
- 4.4lbs
- 0.66" thin

For $2,759 (Macmall Discount MSRP $2999)
- Core i7-4870HQ (faster but older so it hurts battery life, the 4980HQ is also available for an additional $200)
- 16GB RAM
- 1TB SSD
- Retina Display (2560x1600 which I think is QHD)
- Radeon R9 M370x 2GB (slower)
-4.46 lbs
- 0.71" thick

Basically Apple is selling a mixture of outdated and updated technology for top end prices. Really what you are getting is a vastly superior SSD and mildly faster CPU in the Apple. Everything else is superior in the Dell. You could buy the Dell with the smallest SSD option then replace it with a 512GB Samsung 950 Pro for SSD performance superior to the Apple. Unfortunately the 1TB SM951 or 950 Pro is not available for purchase. I don't know if they even have a custom 1TB 950 Pro option for OEMs like Apple got with the SM951.
