Why does my Minecraft lag?

I'm trying to figure out why my minecraft lags. I have all the settings turned down. I have an amd 6core cpu (3.8ghz), 8gb's of 1333 ram, gigabyte radeon r9 270x 4gb gpu. I can play battlefield 4 on ultra settings and it plays like a charm, but a simple game like minecraft lags. What could possibly be my problem?

I'm pretty sure minecraft could lag on the super computer at SERN. Your best bet would be to reduce particals to minimum, put view distance to small or medium, turn smooth lighting off, turn textures from fancy to fast, and turn clouds off. Also, is it a laptop or a desktop? I ask because laptops are known to have slower bus speeds and therefore reduce performance.

There are several possible reasons:
1.) Your JVM has terrible settings (not enough memory or is niced too much) by default
2.) Your OGL driver sucks or is not present (and so the computer is doing rendering in software)
3.) Your JVM is old or not from Oracle (a off-brand)

If I had to guess I'd suggest looking into number 2.
