My friend has it and he said its a one time payment. He was playing multi player. He said I had to buy it for a full version, obviously, but just curious of which one he had.

Uh… Hmm. Uhh… What version are you talking about again? There's the version of minecraft itself with updates and stuff, but there's a Demo and Full game. Is he talking about those two? If you want to play multiplayer you need to buy the full game.
