I'm thinking about buying a Macbook Pro (the non-retina one with the optical drive or maybe the retina one I can't decide) and I want to know if just the generic one without any upgrades would run Minecraft smoothly if I have lots of other files on my computer. MY current computer sucks and it lags a lot just browsing the web and it doesn't run Minecraft well at all.
What type of ghz processor and how much ram do you need to smoothly run minecraft on a computer?
Your Macbook Pro should run Minecraft perfectly. Especially since it is Java.
Minecraft runs very well on almost every new computer. It does not take much in CPU or graphics power.
There are two POSSIBLE issues. Minecraft, like every other game but Angry Birds, was written for WINDOWS. The OSx version of every game reports a bit buggy, and all Apple runs OSX unless Bootcamp and dual boot and the like to get Windows.
The other issue is that it may be running only single core of a CPU, and therefore the low voltage Intel may not do as well as other CPUs.
MacBook Pro non-Retina, released in 2012 and still around, does use the "M" suffix CPUs rather than U suffix low voltage.

The Retina 13" Does use U version, but is a strong i5, and the 15's are very powerful.
The only thought is spending a boatload of money on what an inexpensive Windows laptop will do just as well or better.
I run minecraft on a notebook with an i7 4700 and onboard HD 4600 graphics and minecraft works great for me, all options cranked up.
