I've already reached bedrock and still absolutely no signs of diamond. Not even emerald or redstone!

Diamonds spawn in from levels one to sixteen. Make a staircase down to about level twelve (most common area for them to spawn) and strip mine to your hearts content. You can also check around deep cave lava pools, by digging a couple blocks out around them.
