comes up, is this safe to download. I don't want a virus on my computer
Yes, Either way, Java is a universal environment that you will probably have to use again. So, you can trust it. As long as the URL starts with http://www.java.com/...w.java.com, it should be good.
Java version 1.6 is quite outdated and, being old, contains unpatched security Obtaining Java from http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp will install the newest version, though, so age will not be a Just don't go looking for version 1.6…

In nearly all cases, the 32-bit version ("Windows x86 Offline") is preferred, even if you have a 64-bit version of Windows.
