When you select multiplayer and it shows a list of servers you can join next to the amount of players there's a signal strength bar. When I put my mouse over those bars it shows an MS what is the best that that can be at in order to have little to no lag?

Less than 50 is good especially if you want to pvp. I play on several servers which range from 30-300. On servers over 100 the lag is noticeable in pvp and over 200 it can be really annoying, but for general survival you can survive on 200 or less usually. Less than 50 is golden though.
