How to play minecraft multiplayer without a server?

I'm having a lot of trouble trying to create a server for my friend and I to play together on. Is there another way to play multiplayer without making a server?

Unless connected on the same network, no.

You can either:
A. Figure out how to host yourself
B. Have him host
C. Buy a hosted server
D. Ask me for help on setting it up and I'll see if I can help. I have YEARS of experience with making Minecraft servers, esp. Bukkit (Modded) servers.
