You don't need to own a server to play online but you do need to connect to own by typing in an IP address.

Here's a good server for you to check out: mc.triforce-gaming.com

paste that address into minecraft direct connect and you'll be online with other players.

On a side note if you want to play with owning a server you can host LAN meaning anyone you want to play with will have to have their PC in the same building to connect to the same network on the router
