How to get on a Minecraft server?

I understand the basics… I think? You see i will go on multi player and try to go on a server that i know should work and it says that it ''can't connect to server''.

Go to multiplayer and click new server, and type in server ip. If you can't connect the server may be down, only certain servers run all the time. Try other servers, if none work then try updating minecraft. Hope this helped
