The title screen loads fine but when i click on the game i get a black screen which i can't do anything in, i use a hdmi cable have tried two different ones but no luck - Recently i downloaded the minecraft demo which would freeze on the title screen forcing me to turn the ps3 off and on this may have caused a corruption but i have no idea if its related.

Here's an easy way to see if its game data corruption.
Whatever game you are trying to play, go to games>game data utility on the xmb (not save game utility).
Find the game data for the game that's freezing up, press triangle and then delete it.
Next turn off the system, then reboot in safe mode. (Google safe mode ps3 for detailed instructions how to get there). From the safe mode menu, you want option 3, restore file system.
This will check for corruption and repair it, after this is done, you wll have to relaunch the game, and download all the patches and updates, and dlc again.
Be aware, however, that it was most likely poor, or a broken stream of internet connection during a download or an update that caused the corruption to begin with. You may be tricked into thinking this method doesn't work, because redownloading the updates recorrupted the data. Use an Ethernet if you have one.
