So I can play online or offline. Have an HDMI cord hooked up. But my boys can't figure out how to play split screen/2 players. It's ps3 edition. I've googled this and can't find any answers and need help. I have an hdtv flat screen. I can't figure out what the problem is. Please help. While playing, nothing happens when they press the start button on the second paddle.

Can't be done, there's no local multiplayer on Minecraft on the PS3 using a single console.

There's split-screen play on PS3. You do have to be using an HD resolution, so make sure it is set for 720p or 1080p. If it's less than that, it won't be allowed.
You may have to have two accounts set up on the PS3. Then when you try to join with the second controller, it will ask which account to log in as.
I'm not 100% sure about the how, but I know it's possible, I've seen my kids do it, and I know it requires HD resolution.
