In Minecraft, can two players play in the same world if they are on different networks?

My nephew lives in NY and I'm in Los Angeles, and we're trying to get into one another's Minecraft worlds. He plays by logging in online, and I have the application downloaded to my computer.

On my end, I've tried to add his server by entering the IP address, but I keep getting a "Can't Reach Server" message.

I also tried the Direct Connect option, but it fails to connect to the server and I get a message that says Operation Timed Out.

It should also be mentioned that I'm on a Mac OS X 10.6.8, and he is on a newer Windows PC…

Any light shed on this would be helpful for me!

You can try something called Hamachi that lets you create or join an existing network just as if you and your nephew are in the same room together.

Here is the link to the download (it is by LogMeIn) so you may have to create an account (it is free) and make sure you click on " unmanaged " download choice.

Just remember you and your nephew will both have to install it and try it out to see if it works.

I have use this on steam playing with a few friends on a "local" network and it worked out fine. You may need to mess around with it to get it to work.
