I don't understand minecraft PE?

There was just an update on minecraft pocket edition and it gives you monster eggs and something that is called an end portal. I was also given a monster spawn. I can't figure out how to hatch the eggs. I layed down the monster spawner and put a Monster inside and all it did was catch the monster on fire, so I tried in a dark area, once again it caught on fire. Why would they give us monster eggs on the update with no way of hatching them? And I can't figure out the portal. I watched YouTube videos trying to figure it out and nothing helped or worked. There's a portal core and a portal end and I don't understand how they work.
