Minecraft will not die no matter what I do short of force restarting my laptop (MAC)?

Hi, I'm trying to quit my laptop as it has been sleeping for weeks because of this problem. I've finally decided to turn to Answers since it might be helpful?

I know that force shutting down my laptop can be really bad for it, but I don't know what else to do. When I click shut down from the apple icon, the dock disappears and then… Nothing happens. I'm still able to open folders on my desktop. From there, I can't do anything, so I have to force shut down. When I go to Activity Monitor, it tells me that the application isn't running anymore. From Terminal, I've tried all of the force quit commands, including killall Finder, and everything from just the regular force quit to level 9. (I don't know what that last one is called.) How can I solve this? I"m out of options:,)

Don't kill Finder. Minecraft runs on Java. Check if you have any Java instances running and check the commandline it's running with. Chances are it's Minecraft. It wouldn't hurt either to check if there's a separate Minecraft executable running as well.

If not, then log out of your user session and log back in. Assuming that it works the same way as in Linux, it would terminate all running user applications upon logout.
