It it safe to Skype people from Minecraft?

My 9 year old brother (turning 10 next month) loves Minecraft and plays it everyday (if not everyday, then most days). He likes to play online and has made "online friends" on it, just people he plays with.

Anyway, there's this particular friend he's made on Minecraft that he's been asking to Skype with. There've only both shared with each other their first names and age (the person he plays with says she's 11/12).

Point is, is it safe to Skype with people you've never met in person? At school, I've heard plenty of things about cybersafety and all that, so I don't know whether he should Skype this person or not. I've read some places that it should be okay as long as you don't give out any personal/sensative information, but I just want to be certain.

I mean. If you're still not certain and you care about your younger brother then you could skype with him?
Just like sit there and Skype with your brother and talk to the other person with him.
I do that sometimes with my younger brother when he's using the microphone. I just talk with him lol

Well, you can get your IP traced from Peer to peer connections, which skype has.
They can get your location, so unless you trust this person, don't add them on skype

Well generally No its not at all safe to talk to unknown persons but like you said as long as sensitive information is not shared its alright. Skype is actually a pretty safe site and well your not likely to come across that many perverts there and the same can be said for Minecraft… So there's a good chance your brother is speaking to a girl of the spoken age. But i advise you to be present (not on front of the camera) but be somewhere close by and supervise the entire thing for at least the first time they chat. If you don't find anything suspicious then let your brother talk to his new friend though make sure he doest spill any thing too personal whilst chatting
