Is the intel core i7 worth it?

Hi, I'm building my very first gaming pc in about a month, and I have currently selected the i5-4670k for my CPU, and the EVGA GEFORCE GTX 770 Superclocked w/ acx cooling for my gpu. I was wondering if it would be smarter to go with the i7-4770k, even though it is about $100 dollars more. Is it worth it? Or should I stick with the i5? How much will it affect my fps in games like crisis 3, battlefield 4, skyrim, and even… Minecraft… Yea, I still. Find that game fun. Anyway, please share your thoughts. Thanks!

Added (1). Also, I have a job so money doesn't matter too too much. I would like to save a little though. Will the i5 become outdated soon? Is the i7 not worth the money?

You only really need the i7 if you're doing heavily multi-threaded work like video editing and rendering. For just gaming the i5 will be perfectly adequate.

Stick with the i5. Upgrading to the i7 will not give you much gain for the price paid. The i7 line is aimed more for production software which can make use of multi-threading (Media creation/edition). For games this is almost useless. Current games are just now getting around to making use of multiple processing cores much less multiple threads per core. The general rule right now is i5 = gaming i7 = production.

I just upgraded to the i5 3570k which is last gen from the one you have selected. This chip blasts through all the games you mentioned above on ultra settings with my graphics card. Any fps difference between all these mentioned chips would be marginal. Go with what will save you money. The i5 will still be great in the future.

You right at the right CPU now, The only way you would want to go to a 4770K is if its on sale at 3570K prices or less! The Micro Center has that deal!

The i7 will make absolutely no difference in gaming., PC gaming is about 99% dependent upon the graphics card, and you have picked a fine one with the EVGA GTX 770.

However, that being said I still often recommend an i7 with the benefit of Hyper-Threading just in case you need extra processing power for something OTHER than gaming on down the road. It nice to have that power when you need it, so you don't have to worry about upgrading. If you have the extra money get the i7.

But to answer your question, it is worth it if you ever use your computer for video editing or encoding or any other multi-threaded tasks. For a gaming rig though that does nothing but plays games, the i5 4670k is the right choice.

As pretty much everyone has covered, the 100$ price difference lies in editing. The i7 has all the capabilities of the i5, but processes and renders stuff quicker due to the architecture in it. You won't notice any difference in gaming, is be surprised if you dropped even 1FPS while using the i5 over the i7.

I have the i5-4670k with a GTX 770, EVGA. Which is the same as you listed, one of those combinations that flies through games, work, anything you put in front of it. All games maxed our with no problem. You'll like it just as much as I do

Its not worth it for gaming my build has a Intel Core i5-4670K along with a 780 ti and can play all games on Ultra with excellent FPS.

I7 it's not worth for gaming, so an i5 should be enough. Check out these PC build guidelines for more informations: http://pangoly.com/en/pc-build-guidelines
