In minecraft it won't let me harvest cobblestone and yes i'm using a wooden pickaxe?

I had just drowned in a waterfall and lost everything and i started over and it won't let me harvest cobblestone. YES i'm using a wooden pickaxe, they break apart but don't give me anything. I can collect sand tho
