Why is my minecraft building distance really short! How do I make it longer and why is it like this?

Your place distance should be about 4~6 blocks, I forget the exact number. If you can't reach that far you should submit a bug report, if that is as far as your can reach that's it, you can't reach any further than that without a mod.
