Does minecraft automatically back up your worlds?

The last time I did a system nuke when I reinstalled my OS and all of my stuffs minecraft had all of my worlds restored as if by magic. So this time I did not backup my world data and now I have zero worlds. I was so shocked as they were the product of years of fun and ingenuity. D: I'm still recovering from the blow. ///_o nyan:3
