Can I play on Minecraft in peaceful mode and still be able to eat?

My little sister wants to join me on an LAN but doesn't like the hostile mobs, which means the difficulty must be kept to peaceful. However, a large part of the LAN is being able to grow and sell food, is there any way we can play in peaceful but so that the food bar goes down over time?
