Acer computer not starting up?

I bought an Acer Windows 8 computer earlier this year, and it has never had any trouble before.
This morning I tried to turn it on, usually it would come up with the "Acer" logo and then go straight to my lock screen, but instead it showed the "Acer" logo and went to a black screen.
The cursor is visible on the screen, and I'm able to move it around but there's no way I can actually get into my computer.
I left it for about 30 minutes because I thought it may be starting up very slowly, but I came back to it and it was still on the exact same screen.
I've tried turning it off, and then turning on several times which did nothing.
Just before, I tried to find some advice on the internet, and one website advised to turn on the computer, and while it is starting up, press down on the on/off button again. The website said when turned on again, it should come up with the "start windows normally or repair" screen, but instead it came up with the Acer screen as usual, and then the black screen, but with no cursor whatsoever.
What is wrong with it?
How can I fix it?
I don't think I did anything unusual when I was on it yesterday, I was just on the internet on Facebook and I was playing Minecraft singleplayer, and that was about it.

It could be a software or hardware issue. I'm have never heard of this type of situation before. My first thought would be that the screen doesn't work but you said it did. Try using an external screen like an HDTV or monitor with a vga or HDMI port.
