So i play minecraft a fair bit and a problem i always come across os having a full inventory. I was thinking about installing the backpack mod so i can have a larger inventory space. I need an opinion on whether this mod would be fair or kinda cheating.

It really depends on you and your preferences. Once you've got mods installed it's no longer vanilla, its part of the game having to deal with your inventory space. On the other hand its not really going to affect game play that much and I would personally classify it as convenience rather than cheating. Also its also worth considering if you install the mod you will lose more when you die.

It is cheating but not that serious. I think you should not do that anyways.
I recommend that you build small bases with chests where you can store the things you don't currently need for the action you are performing at the moment. For example when you are mining build a base somewhere close to the mine or inside the mine where you can store all the stones you gathered and go pick them up later.

Many people play with modded Minecraft, its not cheating at all.
I, for instance, won't play an unmodded Minecraft anymore. I want the mods NEI and Inventory Tweaks at the very least.
More regularly I play with dozens of mods. Forestry has a number of good backpacks, the cheap ones are inexpensive, but the expensive ones are very time/resource intensive. I'm also a huge fan of Ender Storage, which adds an improved Ender Chest and the Ender Pouch, which when properly prepared shares inventory space with an Ender Chest.
