What are good ipod alternatives for older kids?

My 10 year old son wants an ipod for christmas, but because of the price, and them being so fragile, i'm looking for an ipod alternative for him. Can anyone tell me what a good choice would be, that is about the same size as an ipod? Also, one that has alot of free games for him to play. I noticed that each tablet has their own app store, so how can i make sure he can play the games he is looking for? Like minecraft, happy wheels, fruit ninja.although he is 10, he is used to playing"more mature" games on his xbox.

A generic mp3 player is a good option or a cheap tablet. MP3 players start at $20 for usable ones and tablets start at $89, they also sell used ipods at game stores like gamestop.
the psvita game system is another way to go, they are very durable ( just use a screen protector ) and have tons of games inclding minecraft which is coming to psvita next spring, they cost $199 but might be on sale for less around the holidays. Psvita can play playstation 1, psp and psvita games and playstation mobile games ( basically iphone type games ) and it has a lot of kids and adult themed games so he will like it for years

the app stores on the tablets have two versions, apple uses ios and has the apple store and google uses android so has the android store, there's also windows but they have very few apps and games compared top the others ( its just not popular )

Get him a walkman. Very durable and can play CDs, something you don't see everyday.

Just kidding you can find generic mp3's almost anywhere for around 30 bucks. I'd recommend the iPod shuffle though because it's small and light.
