Okay. I'm going to try my best to keep this short.
Mojang (The creators of Minecraft) Started the creation way back long ago. It was made on PC and has gone through the Pre-Classic, Classic, InDev, InfDev, Alpha, Beta, Official Release (This is when it got popular and went widespread) and is now currently being added onto slowly.
Due the widespread popularity of the PC version, and the huge market of consoles, Mojang teamed up with 4J Studios to create Minecraft on Consoles.
Every release of Minecraft (and any product for that point) has a version number.
PC is currently in 1.7.4. The "1" represents that it is the Official Release, the "7" means that it is in the 7th major update, and the "4" means that it is the 4th minor variant of the "7th" major update.
The Xbox 360 edition version is currently 1.5.1. A lot of changes have happened in PC since then. Thanks to a console's limitations, progress is slow in updates.
The PS3 edition version is currently 1.0.2. Way TOO MANY things have changed since then.
