The thing is, I want to play with my Xbox friends but I can't't just because I have the Java edition of the game.
How can I update from Minecraft Java Edition to Minecraft Windows 10 Edition?
You have to rebuy the game. The license isn't transferrable.
Depending on when you bought the Java edition, you may be able to get a code that you can redeem for a free copy of the Windows 10 edition.
It ultimately depends on WHEN you purchased the game. Mojang & Microsoft was giving copies of the Windows 10 (Bedrock) Edition to everybody who purchased the Java version PRIOR to October 19th, 2018. This was originally announced shortly after Windows 10 was released.
If you purchased the Java Edition before the cutoff, you will need to log into your Mojang Account by visiting & you should see "Minecraft for Windows 10" in the "My Games" section of the page. If you have it, there will be an option to claim it for your account. It'll give you the gift code & instructions on how to claim in.
CAUTION: You only get one copy of the code & it gets PERMANENTLY TIED to your Microsoft account (what you're using with Windows 10). Mojang & Microsoft is not responsible if you lose the code or if it gets stolen by anybody else… So don't give it to anybody.
