Can I use a USB controller for minecraft on a mac?

I have minecraft on Mac OS X leopard and I want to use a Controller.

Are controllers compatible with Mac minecraft? If so, what types are compatible? Xbox? Play station?

Are there any special programs I need to use a controller on minecraft? If so, are they free?
