I recently got minecraft on xbox one and my friend wants to buy mine craft on his iphone 7 but wants to know if we can both play local using Wi-Fi same network, together or does this to work require realms?

As long as you're running the same version of Minecraft (w/ the Bedrock Engine), you should be able to in one of four ways.
* Via LAN w/ an open world (whoever is hosting the game must open up their world to the LAN)
* Online through Minecraft Realms (centralized server run by Mojang)
* Online via a Private Bedrock server (operated by somebody)
* Via XBox Live (for other XBox One users)
You may need to double-check to make sure you're playing the same version as you'll likely run into problems if this doesn't match up (like iOS version running 1.2.3, but the XBox One is running 1.2.5)

The iphone doesn't support servers, and even if it did, the Xbox One doesn't use the same servers that the iPhone uses.
