Would this gpu work for playing minecraft a bit smoother?

Yes, it will play Minecraft just fine. It actually seems strange that your current GPU is having problems because the game requires very little GPU power. Have you tried changing the graphics settings in game i.e. Turning down the render distance, and shading? Give this a shot before you buy anything.
