If I put in a seed from say 1.2 or something would I be able to have the newer features of my current version?
Will new Minecraft updates be applied to old seeds?

Yes all you have to do is explore a few thousand blocks out to get the new biomes and structures. The new crafting stuff will be there anywhere. All you have to do is keep updating and since the world is limitless you will never have to make a new world.
