I purchased minecraft Windows 10 edition on my laptop, loved it but i realized i wanted the java version instead. If i buy the java version as well, will it work properly?

Yes. I have both installed and they both run perfectly. Minecraft Windows 10 Edition and Minecraft Java Edition are two separate programs, despite both being a version of the same game. They are independent from one another and will not interfere with the other in any way. You can even have both running at the same time.
