Will chocolate candy stick to frosting on the side of a cake?

I'm making a Minecraft themed cake for my cousin's birthday. I found a cool one and wanted to recreate it, however the one I found is covered and decorated completely using fondant. I HATE FONDANT. It's such a waste because it tastes terrible so no one really enjoys the cake. I was wondering if I could do it by frosting the cake, making square candies, and sticking those candies to the cake.

Will they stick? If so, will they stay or just fall off? Is there a surefire way to MAKE them stick?

You can put a ribbon around the cake that can help to support the stick

I believe that if you use a thick buttercream, the candies will stick to that. There are a lot of Youtube videos for Minecraft cakes that do not use fondant. This one may be stranger than most. It uses Jell-O squares for water and rice krispies for sand.

Get some dr oetcka shimmer spray its like glue

That's a cool cake. Just place a good amount of frosting on the sides to ensure that the candies will stick.

Ally, what my wife does for the grandkids birthdays, is when she bakes the cakes, cools and dresses them, she applies a crumb coat all over the cake and allows it to almost set. Then she applies a thick layer of buttercream, then lightly presses the shapes to the buttercream, and they stay on.

Sure you can. I made a cake for my son one year in the shape of a pumpkin (his birthday is late October) and used chocolate bars cut into triangles for the eyes, nose and mouth of the pumpkin. It used regular frosting tinted orange.
