I recently got a new laptop. The graphics processor is nvidia gtx 1050. When I go to play minecraft normally, it only runs around 30fps. With the card I have it should be way beyond 100. What do you think is the issue?

Well I Will say this, nothing runs beyond 60 fps reliably, if at all, and if they do, then what's the point? You won't tell much of a difference beyond 60 fps

Check to see that you have the graphics accelerator software installed! If you try to adjust your resolution to big and it didn't fill the screen and you can't find the graphics software to adjust it that's a sure sign!
Without it your card will run snail slow

Update your Nvidia Driver and make sure afterwards it installed the Nvidia Control Panel

Look for the green Nvidia Icon on the right of the Taskbar by the Clock
Open the Nvidia Control Panel and at the top open the Desktop Menu
Checkmark all choices.
