I've been playing Minecraft for a while now, and I finally amassed enough Eyes of Ender to go on a Stronghold hunt. I followed the eyes until they started going in the other direction, and I dug straight down from where they went straight down. I couldn't find any stronghold, and I cleared out the entire area pretty good looking for it, all the way down to bedrock. What could be wrong?
Why won't my Eyes of Ender locate Strongholds?

Try going a few blocks over from your hole, in which ever direction, and dig another one
