Shouldn t playing with your friends Minecraft be a little cheaper? I mean, I would Totally go for it if it was $13 forever, but for month? No way, Why is it so much? Is there something extra special that makes it worth it?

As a Microsoft user, I can say-
Its microsoft, they will charge for pretty much anything no matter how small.
Most games(That I've played) that have a sub fee run 7-14$ so. It sucks having to pay however you can set up a server yourself using hamachi(If I recall, I always had another friend do it) Corse its not a good idea to let strangers on or anything, but its nice for the smaller private games.
