Why does my minecraft video lose quality?

I'm trying to upload a Minecraft video with commentary. After recording the gameplay the quality was fine, even tested it on youtube and it came out as 720p. But I ran into a problem after putting the video into windows movie maker and adding mp3 quality and then saving as an avi the quality comes out horrible. Why is that?
