Why do my minecraft texture packs not work?

Added (1). i downloaded pack and put in folder. When i open texture packs i can see the texture pack i downloaded as an option. BUT in parenthesis under it. It says (the default look of minecraft). It does this on every download no matter where i get it from. I even watched a tutorial to see if doin something wrong.

Try downloading it from planet minecraft or it you might be using the wrong version of the texture pack like if your on 1.6 and you use a 1.8 texture pack it won't work
